You may be wondering how I was able to complete my book, editing, and move into publishing it. Well, it took quite a lot of discipline, because I have the incredible ability to putz away an entire day! Maybe you are unfamiliar with the idea “to putz around,” where putz is a verb.

At any rate, that is what I tend to do alone at home, if I’m not careful. It felt good for several months, after teaching in an elementary public school, where everything is super structured (down to bathroom breaks, which are few and far between). Once the initial feeling of freedom diminished with time, though, I started to worry that I—mostly—had very little to show for my days. What did I really accomplish? Further, did I ever complete anything?
I considered the idea of time in seconds, minutes, hours, and so forth: There are sixty seconds in each minute, sixty minutes in each hour, and twenty four hours in each day. Thus, we are given eighty-six thousand, four hundred—86,400—seconds in which to live each day. This is a free gift!
